Invisible Shield

Sun bleeds new day through the cracks in the curtains, heart thuds like cemented dread.

As you wave goodbye to your family, the tears in your eyes are the words unsaid.

Fear needs no company, distorts the silence in your still,

Mock’s distraction waits patiently; a moment’s reprieve will fill.

But faith doesn’t shrink under the shadow of doubt,

A brave soul shines when the lights go out,

In solitude, where prayers, soft spoken,

Answered in silence, eyes closed, heart open.

This, too, shall pass, I once heard said,

This unfiltered vitriol of words in my head,

Peace will follow, lullaby to infant’s cry,

Grip of pain release me, to the midnight blue sky.
